Edmonton Oilers senior vice-president of hockey operations Craig MacTavish has signed a two-year deal to get behind the bench of the KHL’s HC Lokomotiv, the team announced Thursday.

MacTavish coached the Oilers from 2000 to 2009, leading Edmonton to three playoff appearances, including a run to the Stanley Cup final in 2005-06. He was fired as coach after the 2009 season, but returned to the team in 2012 as the club’s senior vice-president of hockey operations and was promoted to general manager the following year.

MacTavish was demoted back into the role of senior vice-president of hockey operations after Peter Chiarelli was hired as president of hockey operations and GM in 2015.
