Matt Duchene expected to join Predators when free agency opens

Curated

Forward Matt Duchene is expected to join the Nashville Predators when free agency opens on Monday, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston.

Duchene, one of the most coveted free agents this season, is expected to have an average annual cap hit of $8 million.

The Predators were expected to be in on the Duchene sweepstakes after they dealt defenceman P.K. Subban to the New Jersey Devils earlier this month for defencemen Steven Santini and Jeremy Davies along with second-round picks in both the 2019 and 2020 drafts.

Trading Subban cleared up significant salary cap space for Nashville, which was eliminated in the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs by the Dallas Stars.

Duchene, 28, had 31 goals and 39 assists in 73 games split between the Ottawa Senators and Columbus Blue Jackets last season.

Columbus had acquired him in a blockbuster trade in February from the Senators as it tried to make a playoff run. The Blue Jackets swept the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round before falling to the Boston Bruins in Round 2.

Duchene, from Haliburton, Ont., met with both the Predators and Montreal Canadiens this past week before free agency.

More to come…
