On November 11, PrimeTime Sports & Entertainment presents its 11th annual Sports Management Conference and Trade Show in Toronto, Ontario. The event is Canada’s largest sports management conference hosting several of sports biggest names over the 3-day gathering.
The conference will be hosted at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel and run from November 11th to the 13th. It will begin with a welcome reception on the Sunday evening, where the Business of Hockey Institute will honor Mark Chipman, Executive Chairman of the Winnipeg Jets, with the Certified Hockey Professional Designation.
Chipman has been instrumental in the return of the NHL to the Manitoba capital. After the original Jets left Winnipeg for Phoenix, Mark relocated the Minnesota Moose of the IHL to Winnipeg. His company then built an NHL caliber arena in the middle of downtown with the dream of one day having the NHL return. That day finally came in May 2011, when True North Sports & Entertainment acquired the Atlanta Thrashers and relocated the franchise to Winnipeg.
The conference continues all-day Monday and Tuesday with discussions revolving around the latest developments in the sports industry. One can expect lots of Canadian sports business to be discussed, but the organizing committee has also diligently selected executives from international organizations as well in order to cater to the international audience. Notable professionals set to speak include the Head of Business Operations for Real Madrid C.F., The General Manager of the Las Vegas Golden Knights, a certified NFL player agent, and the General Manager of Toronto FC.
While speaking with conference co-chair Trevor Whiffen, he stated that the biggest challenge is to remain relevant in the United States. The push for international sports topics has been followed with more attendees from across the globe. This year, American attendees will represent 17 different states.
This conference presents a good opportunity to learn more on the behind-the-scenes work that happens in the sports industry. It is also a good opportunity to network with professionals currently working for leagues, teams, brands and media companies.
